Welcome to 3rd Block English III
Welcome Back!!!!
Hello parents, guardians and students!
Welcome to a very different beginning of the year at Ashley High School. As we embark on a new type of education, we will be using new tools and ideas to make sure that every student has access to curriculum. We will begin the semester in "Plan C" an will employ Canvas, a program available in PowerSchool, to present information and assignments, to collect assignments, and to provide feedback on student work. We will integrate Edgenuity, video chats, and digital texts into our curriculum.
Our goal is to educate each student to the same level that we would if we were face to face in a more traditional education setting. If we all work together to learn how to use these new tools, I know that this goal will be achieved. However, the key to success in this situation is communication. If you need help, if you do not understand an assignment, if you are struggling with technology or a program, or if your circumstances change, please communicate that to Ms. Riggs (shauna.riggs@nhcs.net) or Ms. Casiere (christine.casiere@nhcs.net) so we can address those issues as quickly as possible and work to overcome them.
Class Apps
In this class we will employ three very useful pieces of technology.
- Remind- the remind app is designed for schools to aide in communication between students and teachers. It is a free app that allows the teacher to send text-like messages directly to students and the students text questions to teachers without revealing personal information (i.e. phone numbers are not visible). To sign up for this, one simply:
Text @4heng3 to 81010. All students need to register and I welcome parents to sign up as well. This should be completed no later than Friday, January 31, 2020.
- Turnitin.com- turnitin.com is a website that runs student submitted work against print and digital sources to spot plagiarism and structural issues. All major assignments will be submitted to Turnitin.com and students will receive a "0" if their assignment is found to plagiarized after teacher review of the results. This tool also allow students to do extensive grammar and syntax checks before they turn in an assignment. Students must create a free account and add our class. Our
Class code is 23721534
The enrollment key is fourth.
This should also be completed no later that Friday, January 31, 2020.
- All Guardians need to complete the Guardian Form link here. This should be completed no later than Friday, January 31, 2020. Just click on the link and complete the form.
Curriculum and Expectations
While the delivery method of our curriculum looks a bit different this year, the curriculum itself is unchanged.
The English III curriculum covers grammar, mechanics, syntax and composition as well as a myriad of literature from many different cultures, genre and time periods. We will utilize all of the literary devices and touch on rhetorical theory as it applies to the literature that we will be working with. This is an upperlevel class and we will rigorously follow the curriculum. We will read, we will write, and we will think about every piece of literature that we cover.Â
We will also complete a comprehensive research paper that will utilize MLA structure, organization, and citation. All research assignments will be submitted to turnitin.com.  If a student plagiarizes any assignment (this includes copying an assignment from another student) then the student will receive a "0" on the assignment.
Grading Policy
The overall grading system for this class is:
